Guinea Pig Owner, Welcome Home...
Welcome to GuineaPig.cc! I’m so happy you’re here. This website grew from more than ten years of sharing my life with guinea pigs, caring for them, worrying about them, laughing at their funny habits, and learning something new almost every day. I’m not a veterinarian, a professional breeder, or someone who claims to know everything about guinea pigs. I’m simply a person who loves these wonderful little animals and wants to share the things I have learned through experience, reading, research, and many conversations with other guinea pig owners online.
When I first brought guinea pigs into my home, I thought they would be fairly simple pets. Give them a cage, some food, fresh water, and plenty of love:what else could they need? I quickly discovered that guinea pigs are much more complex than they may appear. They have individual personalities, strong preferences, surprisingly clear ways of communicating, and very specific care requirements. They can be brave, nervous, demanding, affectionate, stubborn, curious, and extremely funny-sometimes all within the same afternoon.
Learning Alongside My Guinea Pigs
Much of what I know today was learned one small lesson at a time. Some lessons came from observing my own guinea pigs and noticing changes in their behavior. Others came from books, veterinary advice, guinea pig communities, and conversations with experienced owners from around the world. The internet has introduced me to many kind people who were willing to share their experiences, answer questions, and explain what worked for their pets.
Of course, not every piece of advice found online is correct. Over the years, I have learned to compare information, ask more questions, and look for reliable sources before making important decisions. GuineaPig.cc is my attempt to bring together practical information in a friendly and understandable way. I want this website to feel like a conversation with another guinea pig owner-not like a complicated textbook or a lecture from someone who believes there is nothing left to learn.
Small Animals With Big Personalities
One of the things I love most about guinea pigs is how different they are from one another. One guinea pig may run to the front of the enclosure every time the refrigerator opens, while another prefers to watch carefully from the safety of a hideaway. Some enjoy being held and gently stroked. Others show affection by sitting nearby, taking food from your hand, or greeting you with excited squeaks.
Learning to understand these differences is part of the joy of living with guinea pigs. Their noises, movements, eating habits, and daily routines can tell us a great deal about how they feel. A happy “wheek” may mean that vegetables are expected immediately. A quiet guinea pig may simply be resting, but sudden silence or a change in behavior can also be a sign that something is wrong. The better we know our guinea pigs, the easier it becomes to notice those important little changes.
What You Will Find on GuineaPig.cc
On this website, I share information about guinea pig breeds, housing, food, toys, behavior, noises, health, lifespan, and everyday care. You can learn about smooth-haired American guinea pigs, rosetted Abyssinians, long-haired Peruvians, curly Texels, plush Teddy and Rex guinea pigs, and even hairless guinea pigs. I also discuss choosing a suitable enclosure, providing enrichment, understanding social behavior, and creating a safe and comfortable home.
I try to explain not only what guinea pigs need, but also why they need it. For example, hay is not simply a snack-it plays an essential role in digestion and dental health. A large enclosure is not just a luxury-it gives guinea pigs space to exercise, explore, and express natural behavior. Companionship, hiding places, clean bedding, thoughtful feeding, and regular health checks all contribute to a happier life.
Care, Patience, and Plenty of Hay
Guinea pig care does not have to be perfect from the first day. Most of us make mistakes, change our setups, discover better products, and improve as we learn. What matters is being willing to pay attention and make changes when our guinea pigs need them. Good care grows from patience, curiosity, and genuine concern for their well-being.
Health information on GuineaPig.cc is intended to help owners recognize possible warning signs and become better informed. It is never a replacement for diagnosis or treatment from a qualified veterinarian. Guinea pigs often hide illness, so changes in appetite, weight, breathing, energy, droppings, or behavior should be taken seriously. If you believe your guinea pig may be unwell, contacting an experienced exotic-animal veterinarian is always the safest choice.
